This data breach that affected Virgin Media happened because of a database that contained mainly customer information being left unsecured between April 2019 and February 2020. The data that was stored on this database included names, addresses, email addresses, and telephone numbers. Virgin Media confirmed that no passwords or financial information was stored on this database, but some contract data for some of those affected was included, and may have involved particularly sensitive information.

It is believed that this data leak happened as a result of human error within Virgin Media, with Virgin Media finding out about the breach from an internet security firm after it had already happened.

Almost all those who were affected by the data leak were existing Virgin Media customers who either had television or telephone landline accounts with the company. However, the data breach was not only existing customers, and it did include some potential customers who had been recommended to join by friends in a promotion, we understand. In total, the breach affected approximately 900,000 people and has led to a group action case against Virgin Media that we are running.

Whilst the details available on the database did not include any financial details, it is possible that they are able to be misused by cybercriminals. By having a person’s name, phone number and email address, this could allow potential criminals to attempt to pass themselves off as real and trustworthy companies, perhaps over the phone, where they may then try to scam people out of their money. It is also possible that these details could be used for nuisance calls or identity theft as well.
