Virgin Media – part of the data breaches in 2020

There was a spate of data breaches in 2020 that led to a lot of new group actions that we have taken forward on behalf of thousands of people as specialists in this niche and complex area of law. One of the biggest and most infamous data breaches in 2020 was that of the Virgin Media data leak that was discovered at the start of this troubling year, which later went on to see the full throttle of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Virgin Media data leak actually started in April 2019 and lasted until February 2020 when, at this point, the issue had been identified by third-party security researchers. Victims of the data breach, which numbered some 900,000 people (mainly customers), then began receiving notifications that they were affected around March 2020. As soon as people were being notified about what had happened, we were immediately contacted by concerned victims of the breach and we agreed to take legal action forward on a No Win, No Fee basis straight away.

Whilst this is one of many data breaches in 2020 that we have taken forward as part of a group legal action, the Virgin Media data leak is certainly one of the biggest.

Joining the Virgin Media Group Action

The Virgin Media Group Action for the data leak has been ongoing now for over two and a half years. As such, we are at an advanced stage for many of the people that we represent, and there are no guarantees that anybody who is thinking of only starting the claim now will be able to benefit in full.

There can be many dates and deadlines to meet to make the most of a data breach compensation case. Depending on how many of these have passed may depend on the nature of the damages that you could be entitled to receive. In some cases, you may be completely “statute barred” from pursuing a case, or you may have missed a key court deadline which, ultimately, means you may be out of time to bring a claim. We can tell you from a lot of experience that many people will miss out on the deadlines and some could lose out on serious compensation. Sadly, we have had to turn people away in the past who missed out on potentially being able to receive tens of thousands of pounds in damages simply because they did not start their claim soon enough.

Given that we are working on a No Win, No Fee basis, there really is no reason why anybody would not start their claim straight away. You have rights, and the GDPR can entitle you to claim compensation for any distress that you suffer from that is caused by the loss of control of your personal information. When it comes to the Virgin Media data leak, we know that the issue stemmed from an incorrectly configured database, and we consider that the case is straightforward and that anybody who has been affected could be entitled to join our action.

Do not miss out

Please do not miss out on your chance to recover potentially thousands of pounds in compensation – all on a No Win, No Fee basis.
