About the Virgin Media cybersecurity leak

The Virgin Media cybersecurity leak was discovered by a third-party security researcher at the end of February 2020. The incident arose because an employee is understood to have incorrectly configured a database, which meant that the information contained in the database was accessible online.

The accessible information affected 900,000 people, which included customers and some non-customers that were on the list for marketing reasons. For over 1,000 affected, there was also contract information that is understood to have included data about requests for certain websites to be blocked or unblocked. This reportedly included explicit websites and gambling websites.

The data was accessible between April 2019 and the end of February 2020. During that 10-month breach period, at least one unknown third-party is understood to have accessed the database.

About the compensation action

The compensation action for victims of the Virgin Media cybersecurity leak is designed to pursue compensation for the distress caused by the loss of control of their personal information. Where applicable, victims could also be entitled to recover losses and expenses too.

Virgin Media should have notified all victims to confirm that their data has been exposed. The main criteria for being able to join the compensation action is that you have received confirmation that you are a victim of the breach.

Virgin Media could face a substantial fine from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) which could be in the millions. Money from fines isn’t designed to be used as compensation for victims which is why we launch separate actions. We can pursue cases on a No Win, No Fee basis, so what have you got to lose?
