Virgin Media data breach compensation amounts

Lawyers In The News

Victims of the Virgin Media data breach could be eligible to claim up to £5,000 in data breach compensation amounts.

The Virgin Media breach is prime an example of a sizeable and well-respected company not taking data security seriously, in our view. The number of people involved in the breach is shocking, and the only way to hold Virgin Media to account is if victims claim compensation and hold the company to account for their actions. This is also the way in which victims can seek the justice that they deserve.

We are currently taking claims forward for victims of the Virgin Media data breach and are encouraging anyone affected to join our claim. We already represent a large number of victims and we are ready to help you. We have years of experience dealing with data breach claims and actions, and we have helped thousands of victims claim millions in damages across all of our multi-party and group action cases.

About the Virgin Media data breach

The Virgin Media data breach took place between April 2019 and the 28th February 2020 and affected some 900,000 victims. The breach was identified by independent security researcher TurgenSec who informed Virgin Media of the issues.

The data breach left victims’ personal information, including names, email addresses, telephone numbers and, in some cases, contract information, in an online database that was accessible to anyone online.

The breach stemmed from an ‘incorrectly configured’ database as a result of an employee error, and further investigations revealed that the online database was accessed by an unknown third-party on at least one occasion.

Having the database accessible online for 10 months can leave victims considerably vulnerable to scams and fraudulent activity, and victims could be eligible to claim data breach compensation amounts in the thousands of pounds mark

Calculating data breach compensation amounts

Your Lawyers has estimated that victims could be entitled to claim up to £5,000 in data breach compensation.

Each of the 900,000 victims who had their personal data made accessible online could be eligible to make a claim. This means that Virgin Media could face up to £4.5 billion in data breach compensation amounts.

Aman Johal, director of Your Lawyers, said:

We know from experience that, when personal data is exposed online, it leaves victims vulnerable to cyberattacks and attempts at fraud, such as phishing scams”

“Your Lawyers will hold Virgin Media to account for this avoidable breach of private information, and we will do everything possible to ensure justice for the victims prevails. The door is open for victims to join the action, and now is the time to act.’
